Abstract

Institutional tutoring programs have become an established student-support strategy in Mexican higher education. Their expansion has been associated with reducing course failure, academic delay and dropout, strengthening educational trajectories, and extending support toward personal, socio-emotional, professional and institutional dimensions. Yet program existence, coverage, actual participation, observed outcomes and the capacity to attribute those outcomes to an intervention represent different levels of evidence that are not always distinguished in the literature. This article critically examines the inferential reach of the available evidence on university tutoring in Mexico and assesses the extent to which it progresses from documenting institutional presence toward supporting attribution of outcomes. A critical integrative review was conducted based on Whittemore and Knafl (2005), Torraco (2005, 2016), Hopia et al. (2016), and Snyder (2019). The empirical analytical corpus comprised 14 verifiable Mexican studies published between 2012 and 2026 and was complemented by conceptual, methodological and international literature. Methodological quality was examined using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool, MMAT 2018, when compatible with the study design, without calculating overall quality scores. The synthesis generated CIPRA —Coverage, Implementation, Participation, Results and Attribution— as a framework for classifying the inferential reach of evidence rather than as a hierarchy of research designs or a causal sequence. Eight of the 14 studies (57.1%) reached Participation as their highest inferential level, three (21.4%) Implementation and three (21.4%) Results; none convincingly reached Attribution. Methodological appraisal revealed important strengths but also recurrent non-probability sampling, cross-sectional designs, institution-specific contexts, limited control of confounding and scarcity of comparison groups. The findings suggest that Mexican research has progressed further in documenting program operation and tutoring experiences than in identifying effects attributable to the intervention itself. International research on mentoring and peer mentoring reveals comparable challenges of conceptual definition, measurement and effectiveness assessment. The article concludes that the next challenge for the field is not merely to expand coverage, but to produce evidence capable of establishing what changes, for whom, under which conditions and with what degree of certainty such changes can be attributed to tutoring.
